The yellow fog that rubs its back upon the windowpanes, The yellow smoke that rubs its muzzle on the windowpanes, Licked its tongue into the corners of the evening.

It was such an evening, a low fog rolling in, lit by streetlamps. The smell of cold rain in the air.

She should write tonight. She had had an idea for a play, and she should write it. It would be a play about running away from problems, about getting into a minibus and just driving, driving— and the adventures of leaving a hard life, and the fact that the hard life would always follow one, would always follow. Why hadn’t she written in so long? Because she was tired from waiting tables? Because she had no one really to talk to? Because of the sleeps? She didn’t know, but she meant to write tonight, to pour herself a big glass of red wine and write a play about a family and a minibus and an escape.

When she turned the corner onto West Pine, she could see that the bars were still lit and she could hear the music throbbing from them. No police car was parked in front of her building. She thought about maybe a few drinks at the Town Tavern, a game of pool, she would change into her jeans and a T-shirt, but no. She would write. She would write.

But when she neared her apartment she saw someone sitting on her front steps, someone hunched over and reading a book in the light that shone through the bar windows.

This person wore a dark windbreaker with the hood up over his head. He turned the page of his book and then, sensing her presence, looked right up at her. After a moment she recognized him. It was that boy from the river, the one from the Office Supply & Typewriter Repair, the one she’d given the pen to, the boy with the scars on his face. She couldn’t remember his name.

“I just need a place to stay,” he said.
