CHAPTER 11

"I'm Max. I apologise for the scare. I'm not here to hurt you or cause any trouble, I promise."

"Another one who Simon owed money to, I expect," she hissed, eyes darting towards the door, foot tapping.

"No, not at all. I'm the one who found your partner on the beach. I'm so sorry, and thought it only right I should come and see you to offer my sympathy and check you were okay."

"Gosh, so sorry for being rude." Lucy sighed deeply, swatted at her hair, and smiled weakly. "Max, you are welcome. Please, take a seat. Can I offer you a drink? Excuse me for being so brusque, but in case you hadn't noticed, those men weren't exactly friends and I was terrified."

"I heard. At least some of it. How are you?"

"Holding up, but annoyed beyond belief with Simon for leaving me in this mess. How could he?"

"You didn't know about his, er, rather less that always legal sidelines?" I took the offered seat and sank back into a soft chair that smelled of lemon.

"No offence, but what do you know about it? From what I heard about you, you don't live here and hardly know anyone. You were with that lifeguard, weren't you?"

"Yes, that's Trev. We discovered your partner. Terrible, and so upsetting, I'm sure."

"It really is. Poor Simon didn't deserve that. But I'm relieved you came. I think it would have got violent here if you hadn't arrived."

"Then I'm glad I did. Is there anything I can do?"

"You can prove those horrible men killed Simon and get them put where they belong. In jail."

"Are you sure it was them?"

"Not really, no. In fact, it might not have been. It could have been someone else just as nasty."

"Did you know about Simon and his dealings with them?"

"I kept out of his other business, asked no questions, and played no part in it," she huffed, tugging a thin blue cardigan around her chest as though it could ward off the bad guys. Her brown hair was cut into a very neat bob and her features were almost elven, with high cheekbones and an aquiline nose. There were marks at the bridge of her nose, so she clearly wore glasses at least sometimes. I noted a laptop on the side table with a pair of glasses, and smirked at the realisation I was keeping an eye out for clues and noticing small details.

"I know I'm a stranger, but I am trying to help. People want this solved, and I seem to be in the middle of it. Did you hear what happened at the farm where Simon gets the milk from?"

"I heard. Was it an accident, or is there a connection beyond the milk?"

"I'm trying to figure that one out," I admitted. "You don't mind me asking about these things? About Simon?"

"Go ahead. He's dead now, and I've already spoken for hours with the police. I think they suspect me as now I own the business, but it's the last thing on my mind.
