Chapter 20

With heavy steps, Ben entered Sid’s corporate office, a bright space that overlooked the Rappahannock River.

The FBI had returned Sid’s computer and personal belongings just that morning. Miss Penny had signed for them and placed them on his desk. Thanks to tight IT restrictions, no employees could use their computers to access anything but corporate business. It kept Coombes Enterprises less vulnerable to outside hackers.

Unfortunately, when the FBI had poured over Sid’s hard drive, his computer had provided zero information they could use. Special Agent Winston, the agent over the investigation, mentioned that Sid’s social media accounts were under surveillance, but so far, nothing of interest had popped. With so little to go on, the case had stalled.

If Ben didn’t come up with some type of lead, this case would likely end up in a dead file. Standing in the middle of Sid’s office, Ben glanced around. The FBI had gone over the place with a fine-toothed comb.

Sid couldn’t have vanished without a trace—not unless he was dead. The man had probably holed up somewhere, hiding his sorry carcass away from the light of day. But where?

Ben approached Sid’s desk. Starting with the bottom drawers, he removed the contents and placed them in piles on top of the polished wood surface. Taking a seat, he sorted through each stack, but nothing appeared out of the ordinary.

After two hours, Ben leaned back in the chair and lifted his gaze to the four gold-framed photos on Sid’s credenza—the only personal items in the entire office space. Sid hadn’t been into decorating.

Ben pushed out of the chair and wandered to the pictures. In the first photo, Sid stood between two men who bore a strong resemblance to him. Brothers? Cousins?

Removing the back of the frame, Ben took out the photo and flipped it over to check the back. Gil and Hank. Shenandoah National Park. Ben replaced the picture and repeated the process with the two remaining snapshots.

The middle picture had the same two men, this time on a boat. One held a giant bass. Ben flipped the picture over. Arrowhead Lake, Virginia.

In the third photograph, the same two men wore fatigues and carried guns. The men looked away into the middle distance wearing matching grins. North Idaho.

The fourth looked like a family gathering. Ben perused the picture, his gaze stopping on Sid and a woman with short dark hair. Carline? It certainly looked like their house cleaner. He checked the back. Shenandoah.

Virginia and Idaho. Ben’s eyes slid back to the Idaho snapshot of the two men as a fragment of conversation tickled his memory, then faded. Sid had been talking animatedly to Dad about an all-male boot camp his brothers had attended.

Ben studied the pictures again. The men were dressed like military, not hunters, in the Idaho shot. Could Sid’s family be involved with those paramilitary groups in North Idaho that had set up a splinter group here in Virginia? If so, would he have gone there to hide?

Ben marched back to his own office and dialed his father’s cell.
