Chapter 7

Eros’ iron grip on the wheel was the only thing preventing him from glancing back. Every movement he made was smooth and robotic, thoughtlessly calculated as the car drifted a few feet above the asphalt. Streetlights winked on around him like the eyes of suburban spirits glaring down, judging him for what he’d done and what he was about to do.

He didn’t know where he was going. The turn for the spaceport was a few roads ago, but correcting the mistake was out of the question. The silence is what really got to him. He tried to drown it out with the roar of the engine beneath him by pressing the pedal harder every time he grew used to the noise, though that tactic quickly lost its appeal. Letting out a sigh that fluttered the collar of his jacket, he forced himself to slow down and just let the city roll by around him. Then the intrusive thoughts crept into the grooves of his skull, and he tightened his grip on the wheel before giving up with a shout.

“Call!” he ordered sharply, belching the word into the air. He just needed someone to talk to, a distraction for the growing ache he refused to acknowledge.

The car beeped twice, soft and bubbly, and asked who it should dial.

“Call Balzar,” Eros ordered again, taking one hand of the wheel to rub at his forehead in an attempt to clear the fog that was gathering in his head.

A soft chime began to play on loop, and he let out another sigh as its short melody filled the car. It was strange, having to fight against the urge to glance at the passenger seat. He knew its vacancy like his own scales, and yet a portion of his mind remained spitefully skeptical. Gratitude almost turned him teal when the call finally connected.

“Good evening, Balzar, I hope I find you well in your pocket of paradise,” Eros greeted, letting the words dance off his tongue as he smiled at the screen beside the steering wheel where the froggy face had just appeared.

“Eros!” Balzar responded with equal gusto and noticeably less finesse. “I hope to find you well, though I hope you bring good news.”

“I do indeed, my amphibian friend,” Eros promised, still twirling his words like a glass of fine wine, “and what a beauty this news is. Never had I felt blessed by the opportunity to gaze upon something as stunning, until today.”

“You have it then?” Balzar eyed the camera with the edges of his stern frown already starting to twitch.

“Right here in my hand,” Eros confirmed, reaching down to rattle the chain in his pocket, “and, honestly Balzar, I think the original price was steal for something like this—”

“Hey, hey, hey,” the toad croaked, catching on almost immediately, “you almost pulled a fast one on me, Eros. I deserve a little compensation.”

“I never intended to scam you”—Eros placed his freehand on his chest with a glance down at the doubtful face—“and I
