Cordain’s study: 229 hunter-gatherer societies examined

In 2000, an American team undertook the largest synthesis to date of the diets of hunter-gatherers who lived in natural conditions in the twentieth century. This synthesis completed and confirmed the data gathered by prehistorians on archaeological remains.

This study examined the diet of distinct isolated populations living on different continents, in order to find what foods were constants. The underlying premise was that what varies in terms of diet from one group to another is a matter of culture, and that what is universal and unchanging is natural. Here’s what the research found.

On average, across all the populations studied, two-thirds of the calories consumed were of animal origin, and one-third were of plant origin. Now let’s look more closely at this average to examine the nutritional categories contained in their diets.

Of these populations, 20 per cent consumed only products from hunting and fishing; their diet included only proteins and fats and almost no plant matter and therefore no carbohydrates. No population studied was strictly vegetarian.
