Chapter 21
Atlanta, USA
Karen had offered to drive Tom and Martin back to their hotel to save them calling a taxi so they said goodbye to Dave and Sadie at the edge of the park and walked to Karen's car.
"I need to get some gas first," she said as they reached the vehicle.
"I've never been to American petrol station," said Tom. "What are they like?"
"Just the same as yours I guess. You pump your gas and you can buy all sorts of overpriced shit that you don't need in the store."
"Some of them sell food," added Wendy. "Although the quality varies. I remember being invited over to meet Pete's parents for the first time at a potluck lunch."
"What's that?" asked Martin.
"Oh my! Don't you have them over there?"
"We might call it something different."
"Well, y'all get together and each bring a dish of homemade food for everyone to enjoy," Wendy explained.
"I think we do that informally but it doesn't really have a name."
"It's so much fun!" said Wendy.
"Do you guys want to know how it all turned out?" asked Karen, threatening to deafen them all with her laugh. "Tell them, Wendy."
"It wasn't all my fault. I was running out of time so I bought some sushi from the gas station."
"Gas station sushi?" asked Tom. "That doesn't sound good."
"It wasn't the best," Wendy admitted. "Everybody got food poisoning and Pete was off work for a week in the middle of a big murder investigation. I think the killer got away but I'm sure they'll catch him next time. I hope so, anyway."
"What about you?"
"Oh, I was okay because I don't eat sushi."
Karen pulled up at the pump and noticed the woman opposite was checking the display before paying.
"That woman there has just put $1 of gas in at pump two. Where the fuck is she going on that? Pump three?"
"Maybe she's poor?" Martin suggested.
"She's driving a big-ass truck for a poor person."
"Maybe she stole it?"
"Well she ain't going to get far on a dollar of gas if the police start chasing her. I'd be filling up so I could make it to the state border."
Karen sighed with frustration and got out of the car. Tom noticed that she filled up and thought it was a good idea - especially if the police thought they'd had anything to do with the murder of that man with the small head.
"Stuart and Bhavna won't be very happy to have missed all the excitement," said Martin as Karen returned to the car and they headed downtown to the hotel.
"Maybe they killed him. We haven't seen them all day," said Tom.
"Why would they kill some random man in a foreign country?"
"Maybe he wouldn't accept Bhavna's opinion on something trivial."
"The medical examiner said there were different shaped wounds on his head. Maybe Bhavna hit him a few times with her shoe and then Stuart finished him off with his laptop," Martin suggested.
"Hey y'all. Do you need me to pick you up tomorrow morning or are you going to make your own way to the police station?" Karen asked as she returned to the car.
