Twenty: Untouchable

Malu gestured for us to follow. ‘Keep low and stay close!’

I could barely hear her voice over the sound of laserfire. I didn’t need to use my second perception to know who was on the other side of the facility entrance.

Malu continued up the stairs and entered the facility. We all followed close behind. We walked along a large catwalk that overlooked the factory floor beneath us. Colossal machines were suspended from the ceiling via large chains.

Steaming bodies were scattered along the catwalks and down on the factory floor. A gunfight between black-clad Male Dominion soldiers and a dwindling Female Dominion force was taking place on the far side of the factory. Thankfully, there was plenty of cover around: metal pillars, machine debris, boxes, and so on.

Aiding the males were the two men I saw back in Pilgrim’s village. They wore black armour, not that they needed it. A muscular man was firing the red energy beam from his fingertips, and was again shielded by his partner.

As the beam left the shield that was surrounding them, the white hexagons making up the shield’s shell disappeared to allow the laser through. The energy blazed towards the women and melted through their cover and armour, disintegrating their bodies.

‘Sacet!’ Malu yelled. ‘Get over here!’

My squad were sitting with their backs up against the waist-high catwalk railing. I rushed over and knelt down with them.

‘I’ll contact command,’ Malu said, pressing a button near the faceplate of her helmet. ‘This is AS06, we have encountered The King’s Wrath. Our squad is outmatched. Please advise.’

The King’s Wrath? Is that what these two acolytes were called?

A woman’s face appeared on Malu’s screen. She started speaking, but the rest of us couldn’t hear. We waited patiently, making sure we remained low. Malu’s face was sullen, as though hearing bad news.

‘Understood,’ Malu finally replied. ‘AS06 out.’ The picture disappeared and Malu closed her eyes for a moment.

‘Ma’am?’ one of the girls prompted.

The younger girl next to me was shaking. There were screams from our allies below as the red beam swept through another wave of them.

Malu’s expression hardened and she peeked over the railing. ‘We’ve been ordered to engage and proceed to the central hub.’

‘This is suicide,’ one of the girls said under her breath.

‘How do we beat them?’ I asked as the others stared at the catwalk floor in despair. ‘King’s Wrath have killed hundreds!’

One black-haired soldier shuffled closer and pointed left to one of the hulking machines hanging from the ceiling. Unlike the rest of the vehicles, it was like a giant person. It had legs and two giant cannons instead of arms. ‘I can see a MASU over there. Looks operational.’

Malu raised her eyebrows, impressed. ‘Good. Here’s the plan.’ She shifted closer and we huddled together. ‘We’re going to lure them under one of the hanging drones still under construction. When they are below it, I will liquefy the supports from above and drop it on their heads.’

She pointed at the others one by one. ‘You pilot the Mech, and you five will approach through the middle using the pillars as cover.
