Francine sat in Grace Rivera’s car, getting a lift home from work. Francine’s neighbor Grace hadn’t grown up Amish, but she had been Francine’s close friend for many years. Allison Yoder, Francine’s other close friend, sat in the back seat, also having finished her shift at a small health food store. They had all bought some goodies from the store before heading home. Allison was also Amish, and like Francine, she was likely not to stray away from her Amish upbringing.

Pulling into the driveway of Francine’s family home, Grace jerked the vehicle as she stepped abruptly on the brake. “Here you are, Fran. Home, sweet home.”

“Danki, Grace.” Francine grabbed the container in the cup holder, lifted it up, and took a sip of the fruity liquid. “And thank you again for making me this yummy smoothie.”

Grace beamed as she swept her curly hair over her shoulder. “No problem.”

“See you at church, Frannie!” Allison exclaimed, waving her hand like a swaying branch.

Francine looped the grocery bag over her arm as she got out of Grace’s car. When Grace drove off the property, Francine peered down at her black shoes, shaking her head. “I should’ve known they would both be busy this upcoming month.”

As she approached the house, Francine spotted her father sitting in the rocker on the porch. He looked toward the bird feeders dangling in the yard.

“Guter owed, Daed.” Francine wandered over to him. “What birds have you seen this evening?”

His eyes, the color of the summer sky, flickered to Francine, then back to the yard. “Saw a couple of chickadees chasing one another through the arborvitae.”

A brisk evening breeze swept her frame. Francine wrapped an arm around her torso, gripping her drink container tighter. “It’s a little chilly out here, with it still being the last week of February. Don’t you want to be surrounded by the comforts of home?”

“In a minute. Could see some more birds fly on by before the sun sets.”

She nodded, patting her father’s shoulder. “Just come in before the chill of the night takes you.”

Francine beelined to her room. Setting down her belongings, she flopped belly-first onto her mattress. “Ach.” She groaned. Her limbs weighed her down like blocks of lead. “Would it be wrong to lie here for the rest of the evening?”

She raised her head, then reached for her Bible on the nightstand. Donning her reading glasses, Francine opened the book-marked page and began reading Matthew 19:10–11.

“‘His disciples said to Him, “If such is the case of the man with his wife, it is better not to marry.” But He said to them, “All cannot accept this saying, but only those to whom it has been given.”’” She plopped the Bible on her pillow.

“Leora had her struggles, but she ended up with the man she loves. Same with Violet, and I never would have guessed she would marry someone who’s grounded in his faith. And Alana is afraid of her own shadow, yet she’s dating that guy, Ben.” Francine laughed to release the tension in her throat.
