Chapter Twelve
If I get out of this, I’m going to kill Annabelle.
The thought held a lot of appeal as the pair of dudes, who, for simplicity, she’d named the Crab and Sharkman, picked her up in one of the many halls she wandered aimlessly. A sense of direction just wasn’t something she had. Trying not to flinch at the many stares, she’d traversed at least three halls and four turns before she ran into the fellows who gave her feet a break. She might have protested their abduction more, except, in their grasp, she could relax a little, especially once they announced, “Maestro wants you.”
Which worked at the moment for her. While that purple-skinned dude might be part of her problem, he seemed averse to actually physically harming her. He lived by a motto of “Don’t damage the merchandise.” Even she couldn’t deny that his incarceration in the cell and the liquid sustenance, while unpleasant, weren’t the worst things that could happen to her. The scars on the bodies of the fighters, and the nonchalance of the other females who sold their services told other stories.
“Why does your boss want me?” she asked to make conversation. It wasn’t as if she needed to catch her breath since they practically carried her.
“No say, but he offered a nice reward if we found you.” The Sharkman leered, displaying quite the set of teeth.
It seemed bribery was alive and well, unlike Sharkman’s lunch. “I think you forgot to floss after your last meal.”
At least shark dude had bathed until he appeared somewhat clean. The crab guy on the other hand? He looked as if he’d never seen a scrub of soap.
“Quiet.”
It occurred to her to ask “or else what?” but she held her tongue as they carted her back into the huge room with the stupid open-faced elevator.
She hummed and tapped her foot as it rose slowly, drawing the attention of those lounging around, and yet, none dove for it looking to make a bid for freedom. It seemed so strange to her.
“Does anyone ever try and escape?” she asked.
“Why would we leave? In here there is food, shelter, and prizes.”
“But don’t you miss having your freedom? Don’t you miss the things you left behind?”
Unnerving came to mind when the shark fellow kept staring at her without a single blink. “We begin life in the Pit. We die in the Pit. We enjoy our freedom inside these tunnels.”
How sad.
The ride stopped at the top, yet her escort didn’t step off, merely thrust her toward her old pals, Ugly One and Two.
“Dudes, how nice of you to return to escort me.” She smiled. They didn’t even say hello. So rude.
With one giant beetle guy in front and another at the back, made all the more freaky for their two legs and four arms, they navigated a series of tunnels and guarded doors until she found herself back in the devil’s quarters. Thrust into the room, she stumbled a few steps, long enough for the door behind her to shut with a hard slam.
