While it is true that a handful of very wealthy Singaporeans live in palatial houses on “landed property” (as seen in the film Crazy Rich Asians), more than 80 percent live in the high-rise HDB apartments that are available to rent or to buy. These apartments are relatively small and so much of life is lived outdoors—in the open spaces under the buildings, in parks, streets, eating houses, and cafés.

Affluent Singaporeans prefer the luxurious private apartments, complete with swimming pools and squash courts, and price rises in this sector have increased markedly. To avoid a housing bubble, the government has raised taxes on home purchases, but much of the increase has been caused by foreign buyers purchasing apartments in the popular areas around Orchard Road.
