Excerpt from the sealed transcripts of Dr. Thaddeus Kong’s message to employee M. Liddel, received, Serpens Station, time index 22/53:

. . . Of course I haven’t been ignoring you! But don’t you think I have better things to do than answer every petty interruption? How do you expect me to reverse-engineer the technology of the Vendak if I do not understand it first?

. . . Yes, they pressure you, and you pressure me, and of course all of your precious, precious company hangs in the balance! Go [expletive deleted] yourself, Malcolm! I am a man of science, goddamn you! I have done nothing but live and breathe this, this . . . monster, this golem, this maddening simulacrum of man abominated by machine! Do you think you would not have nightmares, living day and night in the company of that thing, with nothing but a mob of monsters and a coterie of practically brain-dead xenos your only escape?

I’m tired of this. I’m tired of him. I’m tired of you. It’s cold all the time. I lose days, Malcolm. I lose weeks at a time. No human being could be expected to bear up under this, least of all someone of my intellect!

. . . No, I have stopped trying sleep. I don’t want to. The golem invades my dreams when I do. He’s listening to me right now. He doesn’t like you. He doesn’t like me, either. The feeling is mutual. I hate him. . . .

. . . No! You will not relieve me! This is my project. Mine! Do not send anyone, Malcolm. If you try to replace me I will refuse. If you send someone here I will kill him. Do you hear me? I WILL KILL HIM.

. . . I’m perfectly calm. Do not patronize me, you insect! Do you realize that compared to me you have the mind of a child? How dare you? Simon Vector is mine, and if you try to take him away, I will take steps to ensure you never find him.

I will say this only once, Malcolm: Leave me alone.
