I have known Gopi for a long time. We used to play together, several matches against each other too. I have now made a career move into films. I consider myself privileged that I have a chance to play Gopi’s character in the biopic which is being made on him.

I remember one match where we were playing singles in a tournament long ago. Gopi was recovering from an injury and was not in his best form for the tournament. I was leading by a few points. I am very erratic in my game and Gopi knows that about me. He was set back on fitness, but he was playing with my mind. Gopi showed that he was getting tired. He was not even making the effort to clean up the shuttles and kept asking the umpire to have the court cleaned. I was getting irritated by this and even had a fight with the umpire to not allow the interruptions in the game. And a few minutes later, I had lost the match. When we hung out after the match, Gopi told me that I could have easily won. He revealed that he wasn’t tired at all and was asking for the court clean up breaks only to irritate me. He was doing it all on purpose.

The thing is, my focus was derailed. I got distracted. He told me that instead of taking out my frustration on the net I should have just sent a smash his way. He said, show your power on court and not in the small things. I was fitter than Gopi. He had a disadvantage as he was still recovering from an injury. That game was won not on physical strength but by out-manoeuvring the opponent. I admire how Gopi is able to orchestrate a complete game by focusing on both physical and mental toughness. It has brought him glory as a player and now that he teaches it to his players, it has brought them glory too.
