Chapter 20: Rough Times - Lain
After I finally got him back, Shtulls tried to kill himself in his sleep. I canât even imagine what heâs been through. I-I held his severed hands⦠Iâ¦
Des had some silken rope⦠I didnât like that.
But we decided to protect him together. Whatever it was that still lived inside him, weâd force him to overcome it!
Des cried a lot now. Itâs not like I donât understand her, but I feel like sheâs given up on him. Shtulls isnât that weak! I can feel it, heâs fighting in his own way.
But he speaks as his body shakes. He begs for mercy, then laughs.
The things he says break my heart. What that thing did to him⦠If he hadnât ripped it to shreds, Iâd do it after what it did to him and Iâd laugh, Iâdâ¦
âLain?â Des said. She was like a different person whenever she wore her glasses. âDo you have a notepad?â
âA, huh?â
âDamn bumkins⦠Nevermind, Pay-per⦠You know the thin white stuff you write on. Do you have any?â
âOf course...we donât. Sorry, weâre all farmers here.â
Des pulled a leather bound tome from her item storage the title was Desukurietabukku 1.
âIâll just use this piece of crap. Itâs pages are better spent on this. Get me a piece of coal to write with. I want to record everything he says.â
âBut arenât books precious?â
Des turned to chapter 2 and had me read a paragraph. I almost puked. âBurn it!! Oh godâ¦â
âEh, itâs not that bad if you get past that, but thatâs not important now! Coal, I need to write down everything he says.â
I fetched her some coals and a grindstone to sharpen them with. We both sat with him, as he talked of horrors in his sleep and also sandwiches. Does Shtulls like sandwiches? Maybe I should make him one⦠Wait⦠Somehow that idea hurts my pride. Maybe Iâll make him one after he makes me one, actually letâs make one for each other⦠Crap, what the hell am I thinking while heâs suffering so much?
We listened to him until we fell asleep. He was fighting in his own way as he reasoned through it. But each time he woke up, I felt a strong self destructive urge through our pact. His curse didnât hold a flame to what he felt now.
The curse was whimsical, sexual and mostly hilarious, except for that one time that... That I was a bitch. It wasnât long after that I held his dead hands in mineâ¦
Des woke me, as Shtulls began to thrash around, I kissed him to force him to sleep again. I felt guilty, but I knew he needed to sleep to beat this thing.
I removed my sleeping gown and held myself close. Des looked at me, first with disgust then as he relaxed, she removed her dress as well.
Shtulls didnât care about money, power or drink. He only had one vice, and, not to toot my own horn, but... The thing he cared most about was women, me specifically, then, as much as I didnât want to admit it, Des.
