Out of the Mouths of Babes

The other day, I sat down in my daughters’ room to have a little bedtime chat. I usually have one of my staff members do that, but I was feeling all warm and fuzzy inside so I thought I’d do it myself. Sasha asked me a childlike but brilliant question.

“Daddy, is truth always truth?”

A tough question to answer. I mean, truth is how you define it, right? I told her what any father would say: “Honey, that depends on three things—to whom you’re talking, when you’re talking to them, and what you want out of them.”

She smiled and nodded, clearly understanding the nuances.

Then Malia chimed in with a question of her own.

“Daddy, is right always right?”

I stood up, took a deep breath, and made sure I had their attention. “Kids. If it’s right, it’s right. You can’t be right and wrong at the same time. It’s simple logic.”

Sasha chimed back in. “That’s what we thought. So, if you do the right thing all the time, you’ll always be right.”

“Of course, dear,” I explained. “Only an idiot doesn’t understand that.”

“Okay but—” Malia hesitated. “That Mr. Biden guy you sent to talk to us last night, he told us something completely different.”

Sasha cut in quickly. “Yeah, we tried to explain that if you’re right, you’re right, but he just didn’t get it. Do you know what he told us, Dad?”

“If we do everything right, if we do it with absolute certainty, there’s still a 30 percent chance we’re going to get it wrong.”
