Regardless of their planning, they were still not prepared for the Clan juggernaut. In December of 3051, the Blazing Aces were on Kaesong as a part of a private contract when Clan Ghost Bear struck. Realizing they were completely outclassed and that escape would be difficult, Gideon Vandenburg made a tough choice. He hid the Blazing Aces’ BattleMech reserves before taking a medium lance to fight the Ghost Bear forces. Rather than engaging head-on, he used hit-and-run attacks to harry and delay them while their dependents, including his daughter, escaped off-world.

While initially successful, time was not on Vandenburg’s side. Low on supplies and damaged, his lance was caught by a Binary from the Fourteenth Battle Cluster and forced into a last stand. While the unexpected arrival of the Crescent Hawks saw the destruction of the Clan force, it was too late. Vandenburg’s force had been wiped out, while he had been mortally wounded in the battle. In his last moments, he passed a message to the Crescent Hawks’ leader, Jason Youngblood, telling him to inform Maria of what had happened and for her to find his cache of hidden BattleMechs to rebuild the Blazing Aces.
