Twenty - The Waiting Line

Avery

“I’m here!” my sister’s lilting voice draws me from my laptop a couple hours later. I’ve never been so happy to see someone in my life. This hard pavement has paralyzed my butt to such a degree I’m not sure my legs will hold me when I stand.

The aroma of Grandmother Grinch’s scrambled eggs and bacon that she whipped up on the camp stove a few minutes ago are still driving me nuts. That granola bar I had for breakfast has run out and I’m famished. My stomach makes loud noises that echo across the parking lot, making the guy behind me move a few steps away, as if I’ve suddenly contracted a deadly disease. I’m so hungry, I was on the verge of offering Granny ten bucks for some of her eggs.

“You got a great position! What are you? Number eleven?” Ari asks, visibly counting the people in front of me.

Jumping to my feet, I relieve Ari of the various bags clutched in her hands, latching onto the folded chair that I’ll set up very soon.

“I hope they have more than ten robots in stock,” I mutter, peeking into the first bag. “You brought donuts!” I exclaim, snagging a chocolate frosted one and tearing into it as if I haven’t eaten in days. My concerns over whether I’ll get the robot fly out of my brain as I devour my second, then third, donut and get ready for a sugar coma.

“Here’s your favorite Starbucks,” Ari says, handing me the paper cup I didn’t notice she was holding.

I take the cup and yank her into a tight hug, making sure not to spill a drop of the precious liquid. “You’re a lifesaver! Thank you!” Slurping the coffee and snarfing down another donut, I watch as Ari meticulously sets up my campsite. I’m going to be better equipped than Grandma Grinch.

“You did good, sis,” I say as we both stand back, arm in arm, and stare at Ari’s work. She laid a blue tarp over the dusty parking lot surface, then set up the chair with a little plastic table beside it. I’ve got a mini cooler stocked with bottled waters and an insulated bag with chilled fruits and sandwiches, plus another bag that holds a plethora of both sweet and salty snacks. I’m going to gain five pounds waiting for this robot, but who cares.

“What’s the deal with Velour Grandma?” Ari asks behind her hand, nodding towards the woman lounging in the waiting position ahead of mine. The female Scrooge has a little mini fan blowing on her as she continues to read her novel. If she’d remove that track suit jacket, she wouldn’t be sweating.

“She came prepared, that’s for sure. We haven’t exactly hit it off.”

My sister’s eyes widen. “Really? People always warm up to you. What happened?”

I lean in, talking directly into Ari’s left ear. “When I came with no supplies, she made it perfectly clear that she wasn’t sharing a morsel of her food or a drip of her water with me.
