FORTY-FOUR
3:38 AM, home and fried. Left it all out on the keyboard at work, cyberstalking Corby Grundlich. Who, for all Mark knew, could be in Paris using the name Didier Corsu and dating JaneDoe. No matter how many times and ways Mark asked the interwebs about Corby Grundlich, the interwebs shrugged and changed the topic.
Corbyâs deceased sister Melody was more accessible. Before making the mistake of becoming Guntars Rudzutakaâs girlfriend, Melody lived her whole life with her parents, Patrick and Rhonda Grundlich.
But there was no record of Melodyâs parents having a second child.
So why did Melody introduce rural Corby as her brother? Maybe he was a half-brother; product of a previous, rural relationship of Daddy Patrickâs or Mama Rhondaâs. That relationship wouldâve been unsanctifiedâMark found no record of Patrick or Rhonda ever being married to anyone except each other. An out-of-wedlock Corby might not have been awarded the surname Grundlich.
Patrick and Rhondaâs lips were sealed, inside coffins. Mark and Doonieâs only option was to locate their relatives and ask if theyâd ever met Corby The Theoretical Half-Brother.
Doonie researched Rhondaâs family and Mark took Patrickâs.
Mark hit the geography jackpot. Mama Rhonda was from Chicago. But Daddy Patrick was born in Leoville, Illinois. Population one hundred and ten. Ninety-nine percent white. Ninety-eight miles southwest of Chicago, in La Salle County, close to Starved Rock State Park, right off Interstate 80. You could get there in under ninety minutes with just regular speeding. Be a feasible area for Rudy to hole up, especially if he had a local helper named Corby.
There was no listing in Leoville for anybody with the first name Corby or Corbin. But there was a GrundlichâIra, a barber, age eighty-four. But by the time Mark found Ira it was 2:27 AM, when you canât phone an eighty-four-year-old Grundlich to ask if he was related to Patrick, and did Patrick father a bastard named Corby. That would have to wait until well after sunrise.
First stop tomorrow morning would be in town. Doonieâs research into the Mama Rhondaâs family turned up a possible witness. Melody had a first cousin, courtesy of Rhondaâs sister. Maybe Melody confided things to her cousin before she drove into that tree.
After interviewing the cousin, Mark and Doonie would drive down to Leoville so they could question old Ira Grundlich face to face. Cause that always works better. Always. Itâs gonna be a fantastic conversation. Iraâs gonna tell us where to find Corby. Corbyâs gonna tell us where to find Rudy. Weâll arrest Rudy before he murders anybody else. Rudyâll tell us the name, address and ten favorite songs of the person who paid him to massacre Makro drivers. Weâll bust that sick sack of merde and the world will be a meadow of wildflowers.
Mark took off his shoes and fell asleep.
