Chapter 15

PROTECTION

It took half an hour before Agent Coxswain came in, threw a paper folder onto the table in front of me, then sat opposite.

"Hello Chris," Coxswain said. "How are you?"

"My ankle hurts, but otherwise I'm okay," I said.

Coxswain flipped open the file, and I saw the bloody, mangled corpse of a man in a suit.

"That's James Larsson," Coxswain said, "after his security shot him fifty times, of course."

Coxswain turned to the next picture, one of the same man standing with a woman and two girls.

"That's his family," Coxswain said.

Coxswain showed me another picture of a butchered man, followed by one of a smiling family. I looked away, unable to hide my disgust.

"Look at them, Chris," Coxswain said. "Look at what you and your friends did."

"I wouldn't do that," I said. "None of us would. We've been framed."

"Framed?" Coxswain shot me a cold smile. "All of the signals came from the Brownboat headquarters. You and your friends broke in there. We checked all the video, it's authentic. You were there."

"We were there, but we didn't kill any politicians. We were going to steal some information from their servers."

"What information?" Coxswain said. "Why did you want it?"

"There wasn't any data," I said. "The server was blank."

"Make your mind up. Were you there to steal something or not?"

"We found out about a job," I said. "Someone wanted a hacker group to break into the headquarters and download all the data on their server. We decided to take the job, but the server was blank. It was a set-up."

"Convenient. Who hired you to do this job?"

"They didn't hire us. I don't know who he is, but the person behind the killings is called CivilWar."

"Never heard of him," Coxswain said.

"Well, I think it's an alias," I said.

"Like Masterwerk is an alias?"

"It's just an online name," I said. "Plenty of people use them."

"It's a hacker alias. How did you pull off the hack at the Northtown shopping centre? Or was that not you either?"

"I was there, but it wasn't my hack," I said. "I can only turn invisible."

"Yes, I've seen that one too. Very impressive. How does that work?"

"I can't tell you that," I said.

Coxswain shook his head at me, closing over the folder of pictures. "Come on, Chris. If you want me to believe your story, you're going to have to give me something."

"Why?" I asked.

"Why what?"

"Why do I have to tell you how my hack works before you'll do your job?"

Coxswain frowned at me. "Don't be cheeky, Chris. You're not in a position to lose the one friend you have in here."

"I have plenty of friends," I said. "I don't need another."

"Speaking of," Coxswain said. "Where are your friends right now?"

"Gone," I said. "They've left the country."

"Are you willing to take a lie-detector test to prove that?"

"Nope," I said.

Coxswain looked at me for a long moment, before standing and walking from the room.

A minute later, a policeman entered. "Come on, this way."

I followed the cop out and down a corridor to another metal door.
