Lika joined the crowd of servants and workers heading back to the city gate, her mind racing with what she had just heard.

Father Agis had indeed disappeared in the night, snatched out of his church by arachar soldiers. They had done it smoothly enough that the priest had simply disappeared, and rumors had been flying through the city, claiming that Agis had abandoned his flock to hide in the countryside.

Vile lies, every word, but Lika knew the Heptarchy well enough by now to recognize their work.

She had intended to rescue Father Agis as soon as possible, but she needed to know where he was being held, and her efforts to find the location had borne no fruit.

But the cellars beneath the lighthouse – yes, that would be the perfect place. The lighthouse stood on the northern edge of the harbor and was guarded night and day by Heptarchy soldiers. It was an ideal place to hide a prisoner for a few months until the Exarch got around to ordering his execution.

Which meant Lika had a chance to act before it was too late.

She needed to talk to Axerion soon.
