I’d already tucked my sister Olivine and her secret lover in a guest tent as far away as possible, asking her to see herself out. I knew things would get complicated for Plono, and I didn’t need my family around. Yet, I hadn’t had the heart to turn Olivine away when she had nowhere else to go. Now I and my tentmates let Idris rest after her long recitation as we prepared food and drink for our own celebration of Plono Eve.

On holidays we split into whatever pairs or small groups we preferred or we did whatever else we wanted. Often many of us sought a companion from another camp, someone who’d piqued our interest during the past eighth. The reaching out for variety gave it a holiday feel, and everyone encouraged it as a way for the various tents to maintain a connection to the others.

Ksenia and I talked as we cut up the end of the summer fruits for the group to enjoy.

“So I overheard Idris tell Raheem, ‘I just want to celebrate one holiday, one prucking holiday, with a man,’” Ksenia said.

“What did he say back?”

She laughed and clapped her hands together. “He replied. ‘I think I can help you.’”

I giggled. “He certainly can do that!”

“She chose well,” Ksenia agreed. “I’m glad. She seemed so sad when we first met her, but I think she likes it here.”

“I think so too. And a night with Raheem should do wonders for her.”

“It does wonders for most women.”
