Chapter 10

Over the next week, Ozaq spent his time between working and accompanying Maddieleen as she investigated the rest of the village, and made friends everywhere she could.

While he worked, she sat nearby and sketched the things she saw, or made notes of things she wanted to remember. On occasion, Gaul and Siobhan showed up with a haunch of meat for Madelyn, to show their appreciation for their now happy and healthy son. The onions had indeed worked to break his fever, and he’d been happily nursing properly since, but the oat milk had helped to fill his stomach in the meantime, as it had for several other babies who’d had the same illness.

Then the day came when chaos was everywhere around them. Males rushing here and there. Women of two extremes, either crying distraughtly, or hurriedly packing all they could, as the males prepared to leave so they could accompany them.

“What’s happening?” Madelyn asked.

“They prepare for war,” Ozaq said, eyeing them in the distance as he finished up the last of a large sword he’d been commissioned to make.

“With who?” Madelyn asked.

Ozaq shrugged. “Someone who has something they want.”

“Why are the women going?”

“They accompany their males. Set up camp and feed them, care for them if they’re injured, then return with them when the battles are over.”

“Not all are going,” she said.

“Some stay behind. Others insist on following their males.”

“Why not just ask for what they want? Make a trade for something those they’re attacking may want in exchange.”

“It’s not the way we do things.”

Madelyn walked over to the far side of Ozaq’s workshop and leaned against the low stone wall, watching as most of the village packed up in preparation of following the warriors of the village into battle.

It wasn’t long before several of the males strode in their direction. She watched as they watched her, clearly moving directly toward her and Ozaq. “Ozaq?” she said, when she realized she knew them. One was the male she called Chief, the other was Table-breaker.

He looked up. “Go inside, Maddieleen.”

“What do they want?” she asked, backing up to be closer to him as the males kept coming.

“Go inside,” he demanded.

As she closed the door, she heard Ozaq address them.

“Gorta. Blarque,” Ozaq said, by way of greeting.

“I’ve come for my blade,” Gorta said.

“I’ve almost finished it. I need but another hour,” Ozaq said.

“I’ll still be about then. I’ll return for it.”

“I don’t suppose you’ll be joining us in battle,” Blarque said.

“I have no need to join you. I have all I need here.”

“You might find your own female and return mine!” Blarque spat.

“I have my own. You should stop wishing for mine and find your own.”

“Enough, Blarque You know the female chose Ozaq. It is done.”

“I found her!” Blarque shouted.

“And she didn’t care!” Gorta shouted back. “Go! Return to your preparations!” Gorta ordered, shoving Blarque away. He waited until Blarque was a fair distance away and turned back to Ozaq. “I’ll return for my blade in an hour.”

Ozaq inclined his head, and watched Gorta walk away.
