Chapter 21

After the roar of the triceratops echoed down the street, no one argued with Drew’s order to flee.

“This way!” Drew shouted over his shoulder as he sprinted toward the expressway. Due to the abandoned vehicles, they were forced to make their way on the grassy hillside along the main thoroughfare.

Leaves from the trees above swiped at Drew’s face as he was forced to duck below the low branches. After maybe a quarter mile, the road branched off to the expressway through an onramp. Drew followed alongside it until a fence between the freeway and the grassy side forced him to make a decision.

He came to a stop and scanned the area to see if anything followed.

No sign of the triceratops. Hell, no sign of anything. I guess we aren’t the only thing scared off by it.

The rest of his group finally caught up to him. Matt and Jess were fine, but Tiffany breathed deeply to recover.

If she’s out of breath already, we aren’t going to make it before it gets dark.

“Why are you out of breath Tiffany, aren’t you keeping yourself fresh with chi?” Drew asked.

Between breaths, she answered, “No… I can’t… figure out… how…”

He grunted in annoyance and turned to Matt. “You showed her how to heal herself before we left the apartment, right?”

“Duh.”

“Then what’s wrong?”

Jess answered for him. “I don’t think everyone is capable of using their core to heal themselves. The three of us are, and so can Carol, but so far no one else has been able to.”

“Wait, what?” Drew responded in bafflement.

“Yeah, Adam can’t modify his body at all, and neither can Dave, Daisy, or Jimmy.”

“Wait a minute, I sat there and watched Adam upgrade his nervous system. He did it right in front of us!”

“No, you watched him TRY to upgrade it.” Jess emphasized. “You left before he recovered enough to tell us what happened.”

“Is he ok?” Drew asked. “He seemed ok...”

Jess nodded. “Yes, he was fine after a few hours.”

“Great. What are we going to do now though? If Tiffany can’t heal her exhaustion, it’s going to take hours and hours to reach your parent’s place.”

“You can always carry her.” Matt pointed out. “Like you did with Darla.”

Drew glanced at the wide expressway which was jammed full of vehicles and then turned to the grassy hillside which ran alongside it. There was a concrete berm and a chain link fence between the two, but that was no obstacle.

If we take the expressway, we’ll have to climb over all the cars. It’ll be much faster if we just continue to run alongside it.

*ROOAAAARRRR*

The group jumped. A loud roar from the triceratops bounced off the buildings around them. He could not determine how far away it was, but it definitely came from the east.

We should get as many cars between us and it as possible.

Drew turned back to his friends. “Let’s get across the interstate, maybe the other side is better.”

They weaved between stopped cars and crawled over hoods as they made their way across the six lanes of traffic.
