Chapter Thirteen

His chiseled abs were the first or even the only thing she could see when they got out of the car.

Clark was waiting for them when they arrived, which took a weight off Tina’s mind when that fact first registered there, but then it was swept out by the vision of the handsome contractor dressed for the beach.

Meeting at the beach was the worst possible idea.

He’s not here to see you, you nitwit.

How could those possibly be real?

The conflicting but related thoughts chased each other through her mind until she realized Tyler was silent, so Tina pulled herself together. This wasn’t about her and her personal issues with her own body. This was about Tyler and what he needed from life.

“You ready to have some fun, bud?” she asked her son as she climbed out of the car before stepping forward to shake Clark’s hand in greeting like the professional she knew she was, not the insecure woman she was going to ignore that day. “Good morning, Clark, thank you for being on time.”

Clark’s grin made her grumpy, but she suppressed the impulse to scowl.

“This is late in the day for a contractor, so it wasn’t hard to be on time. Plus, I was excited to be here,” he answered her with only half his attention. “Hello, champ,” he greeted Tyler. “You must be my new friend, Tyler. I’ve heard so many great things about you. I’ve been really looking forward to today.”

To Tina’s shock, Tyler only nodded and kicked the ground with his toe, not quite meeting Clark’s gaze, even as he allowed the man to shake his hand in greeting.

Rather than being offended, though, Clark acted as though he hadn’t even noticed, merely beginning to chat as though they had been friends for ages. Without asking for permission, he reached out and grabbed their things out of Tina’s hands and walked toward the beach with purposeful strides, assuming they would follow him, which they did without much thought.

“I am so glad your mom suggested we meet at this beach. I’m new to the island, and I’ve never been to this one before. I’m used to going to the ones the tourists all go to. I don’t know how you all have managed to keep the lid on this one. It’s terrific. Have you been coming here all your life?”

“Yeah,” Tyler answered, finally speaking, and appearing as though he were relaxing slightly. “Where do you normally go?”

“The beach I’ve been to most is the one close to the ferry dock,” Clark said.

“Oh no, that one’s the worst,” Tyler exclaimed. “It’s a good thing my mom told you, then, for sure.”

“It sure is.” Clark agreed with a grin that seemed to include Tina, but she kept her expression neutral lest she allow her hormones out of the box she’d tucked them into ten years before. Clark turned his focus back to Tyler. “You brought a football, that’s terrific. I haven’t had a chance to throw one around in a few months.
