CHAPTER NINE
Riley
The chalet in the mountains was a wonder. Riley couldn't stop herself from wandering around the enormous house with her eyes wide, jiggling a rather cranky Aline on her hip.
"And all of this, all of it is seriously for us?" She gestured from the vaulted ceilings to the polished marble floors, from the tasteful leather furniture to the new stainless steel appliances in the kitchen.
"Of course it is," Khayri said with a slight smile. "There's a woman who comes in to clean every other day, and there is a cook that can be driven up from the village, but I have never had too many troubles looking after myself. Of course, you may be different. There are women that we can interview to take on nanny duties..."
"They're too young!" Riley said automatically, and then she blinked when Khayri came close to her. He had Martine cradled against his chest, and her sometimes troublesome daughter looked as pleased as punch to be held so close.
"Riley, aren't you tired of doing everything by yourself?"
Riley bridled at his words until she realized there was absolutely no censure in his tone, no recriminations or accusations about being lazy.
"What do you mean?" she asked suspiciously.
"Women aren't meant to have the raising of their children on their own. In the past, it was work that was shared out through the mothers, the aunts, the friends and other relatives."
"And since I'm not in contact with my family..."
"And mine is far scattered and too busy, we have to make do. Hence, nannies."
Riley knew Khayri was making sense. She believed the same thing, and there were times in the first year of motherhood that she would have killed for a few hours to herself, to sleep, to bathe, to do something besides look after babies.
"How will I know that they're being well-looked after?" she asked, her voice tiny. "It's been just me for so long..."
She wondered if she were being silly, but Khayri stepped closer to her, stroking her cheek as he would Martine or Aline's when they were being fretful.
"If you like, I can take a few shifts as we find the right nanny. You are not alone any longer, Riley. This doesn't have to be as difficult as it has been."
It felt too good to be true, but in the end, Riley was surprised by how easy it was. The nanny that they eventually decided on was a young and energetic girl with a degree in family planning. With her cheerful smile and eager affection for the babies, she won Riley over, and Riley hadn't realized how very good it was to simply get a break.
It wasn't all a vacation, of course. Khayri had routed his work to the chalet, putting off anything that absolutely needed his presence. He wanted to learn about everything he had missed out on, and he wanted to take part in everything related to the twins, no matter how minor.
"I hadn't expected you to be so very eager about...all of this." she commented one afternoon.
