SHE
Not knowing where to put the trash, the used paper napkins, the bottle caps, the screwtops from the wine, sheâd unzippered the empty front pouch of her backpack and had been loading it up, but when she realized that used plastic cups needed more space than that to be disposed of, she ventured to gaze about for a bin for trash, and then to walk back to the office again, where sheâd gotten ice and the tub for ice. The gallery, and the office, both were sleek and white and bright and clean, and she loved them immediately now in this suspended minute of allowing herself to gaze. The woman was quickly behind her, her face alarmed, ready to proclaim, but she said to the woman calmly, âI was just looking for something for trashâIâve been putting stuff in my backpackâtrash, I meanâbut now there are cups and bottles.â
âOh,â the woman said, a breath of surprise and relief, âyes, of course,â and then the woman said, âIâm sorry. I know youâve been really helping me tonight. I donât know where the fuck that bartender was, but there are all sorts of street people in Santa Monica, and no, you donât exactly seem like a street person, I mean, youâre obviously not, or maybe you are, I donât know. Youâre a tad confusing, let me assure youââ and the woman continued talking but she was no longer hearing her words precisely, the womanâs perfect coral lipstick moving on her lips, her dark eyes intelligent, her black hair moving in its sheets, its wings, sliding this way and that. She heard two words, two words the woman had already spoken, and then these two words she spoke again, Iâm sorry, as the woman handed her a shopping bag with handles, âIâm sorry. This will have to do for now, okay. Just put it under the table. Weâll get something tomorrow.â
