As Mae awaited the filming of her second picture, She Done Him Wrong, she was robbed of several thousand dollars in cash and what she claimed as $12,000 worth of jewelry. She said that was her cost, as a result of shrewd buying, but that replacement value would have been more than double that.

“It happened once to me that I was robbed. I was sitting in my car and an armed man asked for my jewels and my money. I turned over about a thousand dollars in cash. I wasn’t giving up my life for paper money, which is interchangeable, and I knew I could always earn more.

“My diamonds, that was another story. Until that moment, I thought I knew what I’d do. I’d refuse. Even if it would have cost me my life. But what are you gonna do?

“When it actually happened, I wasn’t wearing my favorite diamonds. That was important. My favorite diamonds were my biggest and most perfect ones. I did a quick inventory in my mind, and the ones I was wearing weren’t worth dying for. I did have one around my neck and let it fall into my bust. The diamond felt cold, but it was warm and safe. The robber didn’t notice because he was probably as nervous as I was. More nervous.

“He said something like ‘your jewels or your life.’ I decided it was stupid to be brave. Maybe the police could get my diamonds back, but they couldn’t get my life back. So I handed them over.

“I did get them back, and the police found out it was an inside job. The driver of my car and his accomplice did it.

“The police got back all of the diamonds. The robbers only had time to spend five hundred dollars. They went to jail for a pretty paltry sum.”
