Pal Joey (1957)

Frank Sinatra as Joey Evans (Marlon Brando, Gene Kelly)

Kim Novak as Linda English (Rita Hayworth)

Rita Hayworth as Vera Simpson (Marlene Dietrich, Barbara Stanwyck)

Gene Kelly played the role of Joey Evans on Broadway. Columbia studio head Harry Cohn bought the film rights. He contacted MGM, Kelly’s studio, to arrange a loan-out. Cohn called Kelly to inform him that Kelly would be bringing the role to the big screen. Kelly was thrilled. The problem was that a deal had not been worked out yet. Kelly called Cohn over and over. Cohn told Kelly that he would need more time to make a deal. MGM was asking too much money for Kelly, and Cohn was trying to work it out. Cohn even offered to trade Rita Hayworth to MGM in exchange for Kelly, but Louis B. Mayer wasn’t interested in the actress. Mayer eventually told Cohn to forget it and assigned Kelly to another film, Anchors Aweigh.6 Marlon Brando was considered, but Harry Cohn gave the part to Frank Sinatra instead.7

Harry Cohn wanted Marlene Dietrich for the role of Vera Simpson in Pal Joey. Dietrich was unavailable. Barbara Stanwyck let it be known that she was interested in the part, but Cohn chose Rita Hayworth instead.8 Incidentally, Hayworth had originally been considered for the part of Linda English.9
