Asher looked past Miles to the two young people standing with him. The boy, he noted, was nearly as tall as his father, and looked almost as Miles had when the Lord Protector, as a sixteen-year-old White Shield, first met him. He wondered if the younger Sheffield was as easygoing as his father had been.

Good-looking lad, tall alert…a bit of a mischief-making look about him though. Perhaps he’d better alert the local Peace Force to his identity, in case he proved to be a carouser. Wouldn’t want any embarrassment.

His gaze moved from the boy to the girl next to him.

Sweet gods…

There was a stabbing quiver in his heart. Asher started slightly. It was a bare movement and he thought he recovered quickly, but it must’ve shown, for he heard Eden break from his posture.

“Sir? Are you all right?”

“Yes, thank you, Primet san Gene.” Asher put his son in his place by using his rank, while gratified the boy cared enough to risk a reprimand by asking.

Briefly, he simply stood there, looking at Barbara with a gaze of total adoration. She was his beloved margravine’s double, the same glorious hair, the blue eyes a little darker perhaps, almost a sky blue, but otherwise his sovereign come back to life again. In a rush, the undeclared love Asher had for the margrave’s late wife returned.
