Chapter fifteen
Sergeant Brian Hughes
They cleared the roads closest to their camp in Manchester to ease travel. As their two vehicle caravan traveled farther away, abandoned or crashed vehicles obstructed the roads. Some of them looked complete, with no obvious reason the passengers left them behind, while others still held their zombie drivers prisoner. Apparently, every zombie failed their driverâs ed class.
Congestion blocked the highway around each city or large town they passed and they had to find alternate routes around. This caused them to take a week to reach the remote spot in the mountains of Pennsylvania, where truck number two took its last breath.
Both Brian and Billy stood next to the open hood and stared at the steam pouring from the engine block. Neither man had any mechanical ability to even attempt a repair of the vehicle. Nobody from the misfit squad stepped up with any ideas either, so they were sunk. The area was beyond remote, so finding a replacement vehicle wasnât happening. Their entire crew wouldnât fit in the remaining truck. One hundred miles (plus or minus a few) still separated them from their rendezvous point with the LRRP squad.
âWhat do you think?â
âWeâre screwed, boss.â
âYeah. Too far to hump it and no auto club to call for a tow.â
Billy snickered, and it caused Brian to smile. He scanned the horizon, hoping the answer would magically appear out of thin air. While his mind struggled to find an answer, Billy broke the silence.
âDid you hear that, boss?â
He had shut the outside out while thinking, so Brian hadnât been listening. But now he heard it. Zombies make this odd combination of moaning and keening, which gets louder once they sense prey within reach. These shrieks filled the air all around them, coming from both ends of the narrow mountain road where they parked.
âBilly, we need to get the hell out of here.â
âWhat about all the soldiers and the supplies in this truck, boss? We need to move them and figure out how weâre going to haul everyone.â
Brian considered Billyâs questions, but then he noticed the crowd of zombies shambling down the crest of the hill toward them. Too late. The horde picked up speed as they saw the humans and moved at a joggersâ pace.
âGet in the truck. Weâve got to move.â
The two trained soldiers responded to the threat by retreating to the safety of the large GMC truck cab. Unfortunately for the untrained misfits, most had no clue what to do. Some froze, a few ran for the surviving truck, and others took random potshots at the approaching horde. This drove the monsters into a fury, and Brian watched as his incompetent soldiers fell while he climbed into the cab of the truck. Teeth gnashed as they ripped the soft flesh from the unlucky misfits and the gunfire faded quickly.
Billy turned the key, and the truck coughed before the big diesel engine sang. The transmission ground as he shifted the truck into gear, but forward motion rewarded them.
