A week after her evolution talk and interview Dr. Mary McCarthy received an elaborate document that permitted her to perform certain limited medical practices in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
It was quite elaborate, suitable for framing and hanging on the wall of a medical practitioner. Mary did indeed have it framed but more to protect it than to display. She put it away in a dresser drawer.
She bought a number of props that would make her seem like a conventional medical doctor. This included a big black leather hand bag. In it she put other purchases: gauzes, straps and strictures, cotton swabs, and so on. She also put into it a triple of scalpels. A bottle of disinfectant alcohol. Several pouches of various pills. Disposable fibrous paper face masks. And a number of other supplies which conventional doctors would have needed.
When her bag purchases were done she was quite proud of her bag and how her supplies would fit into it. Fully opened it was like a Russian doll with trays unfolding into other trays into other trays.
She also bought special clothing which an itinerant handyman might buy for himself. These were mostly of tough but soft blue jean material. These were several shirts, jackets, and coverall pants. These were woman cut so that a woman's bottom and thighs were not restricted by bending, crouching, and sitting. She also bought a rubber apron such as one might need when doing splashy bloody work.
She also bought certain firearms and test fired them at an indoor range. Other weapons she bought had cutting edges and points. These included throwing knives and throwing spikes which looked like large nails with small heads. A belt of a dozen small leather pouches held two dozen marble-sized iron balls. Thrown at two hundred miles an hour by muscles of superhuman strength they were as effective as pistol bullets.
It took her three weeks to get all her supplies together. Meanwhile she attended a number of lectures, art shows, stage plays, balls, floral displays, sailing regattas, and all the other amusements which the well-to-do used to make their lives pleasant.
She sometimes attended alone and sometimes with attractive men, some not at all young. Those expecting a conquest were disappointed. One who tried to use force to effect a conquest found himself with black eyes and a belly and crotch which pained him for some weeks afterwards. He laughed his condition off as a mugging from which he'd emerged victorious but everyone knew the real source of his discomfort.

Finally the day arrived when all was ready for Dr. Mary McCarthy to be a doctor again.
Mary rose early and was at the hotel's breakfast buffet when it opened. She was wearing her blue jean outfit for a day of work of some kind. She ate a big breakfast and as usual left for the breakfast attendant a silver dime, a very generous tip.
At the cab stand she waved at the first in line to help her with her two black leather bags.
