“Hold on, I have something for you.”

Oliver looked anxious as he rummaged around in the pocket of his jacket for something. He had just walked me home from Sunday night dinner with his family, and we were standing in front of the door to my apartment.

“What is it?” I tried to catch a glimpse of what he was digging for.

Oliver looked more nervous by the second. “I don’t know if you’ll like it, but when I saw it, all I could think about was how pretty it would look on you.”

He pulled a jewelry case out of his pocket, and opened it to reveal a diamond necklace. The diamonds were in the shape of a small butterfly, and it sparkled as it caught the night lights from the city. I gasped in surprise.

“Oh, Oliver, I can’t accept this.” I glanced up at him, my eyebrows knit together. “I can’t imagine how much it must have cost.”

He blushed, shrugging his shoulders in embarrassment. “It might seem overboard, but it wasn’t just me. The guys from the band pitched in a little, too. We wanted to say thank you for that virtual concert.”

“But that was supposed to be a gift to you. You didn’t have to get me something in return.”

“I know. But the truth is…” His mouth curved into a lopsided grin. “I would’ve bought this necklace for you anyway. This just gave me a reason.”

He held it out to me, and after a few moments of hesitation I took it gently. I held it close, still a little shaken by the thought that Oliver had bought me such an expensive gift.

“It’s so beautiful… But, are you sure about this?”

He smiled. “You want to try it on?”

I nodded, then stopped as my fingers brushed my locket.

Adam’s locket.

Oliver frowned, then his eyes widened in panic when he noticed the locket around my neck. “Shoot, Holly I’m sorry, I forgot about your locket. I didn’t mean to ask you to stop wearing it or anything. I should have thought about—”

He stopped as I shook my head and unclasped the locket from around my neck. “Can you help me put it on?”

He hesitated, looking uncomfortably at the locket I now held in my hand. I leaned forward, pulling his gaze away from the locket to my eyes.

“My boyfriend bought me one of the nicest gifts I’ve ever gotten, and I’d like to wear it, because he means a lot to me. There’s nothing wrong with that, right?”

He opened his mouth to say something, then closed it and nodded. “You’re right.”

I put the locket in the case as Oliver clasped the new butterfly necklace around my neck. Out of habit, I grasped it with my fingers, noticing how rough it felt compared to the smooth old locket. Oliver moved in front of me, smiling. I looked up at him.

“Well? What do you think?”

His smile widened. “You look beautiful. But you’d look beautiful with or without the necklace.”

I blushed. Oliver pulled a small digi-tab out of his pocket.
