SIX

The bottom floor of the complex was designated CC for “Computer Center.” If the twins had thought SB2 was chilly, the Center was downright cold. This floor was set up in the same square as the other two, but lacked the windows and most of the doors of the previous sub-basement floors. Also, every door down here had a security pad next to it.

Liana pulled the RFID security card they used to get into the building from her backpack and held it up. “This do?”

Landon nodded. “Should. If it doesn’t, I’ll have to punt, but I’m pretty sure we got the security code for one of the IT people. I hope. BlotterBabe’s notes said that that code should get us into every place we needed to go. She’s never steered us wrong.”

“I trust her. I don’t necessarily trust whoever she’s working for. Mistakes happen.”

“True, but we won’t know until we try.”

Liana turned and held the card to the sensor. The door clunked open. The clunk was heavier this time. As was the door. She understood why once she walked inside. There were rows upon rows of server stacks. All of which were behind glass doors that looked suspiciously like the freezer doors you see in supermarkets. But something was off about them. She frowned and glanced back at the door. There was an identical security panel next to the door on the inside, but this one also included a keypad.

Pushing past her, Landon hurried in, closing the door behind him, an expectant smile on his face. His smile faltered after a moment. “They’re empty…?”

“Oh, no lights. That’s what was wrong.” She looked closer and saw where each server blade was supposed to be, a dark hole of empty sat.

He pointed her to the right. “You go that way? Call if you see or find anything left behind.”

Liana did as he asked without a snappy comeback. She could see by the set of his face and shoulders that he’d expected some sort of giant blinking sign that announced the presence of the quantum server. Especially since this was definitely a server room.

As if it would be that easy.

That’s not fair, she chided herself. They’d both been at this for hours now, and neither one wanted to leave without the prize. Sure, they’d both found a bunch of cool little things, but the Pulse Qyube was the real treasure. Neither of them wanted to disappoint BlotterBabe.

Shivering in the cold, not-quite stale smelling air, Liana headed to the right with the intent of walking the server rows until she found something of interest. Before she even got to the end of the first aisle, she saw something odd: a medium-sized hatch in the far wall. It looked like a doggie door, but was made of metal, and flush with the wall. Only its framing made it stand out.

After a couple of frowning seconds, Liana dismissed it. It was probably a service drone hatch. Or something like that. She didn’t have time to investigate it either way.
