The yelling was the first sign of the approaching disruption. It was distant and muffled, but could be felt as a low rumble that resonated in peopleâs chests. It was coming from somewhere in the back. The bulked-up human working the front desk, the type of guy who wore a tight suit even though he didnât need any help in looking bigger, glanced back over his shoulder, but then stared straight at the clientele, as if to warn them that no amount of screaming would distract him from his duty to make sure they didnât pull any shit.
Then came heavy footsteps, hitting wooden steps so hard it seemed a wonder they werenât accompanied by splintering sounds. Then a door opened, and voices yelled loud enough to be heard clearly in the front room.
ââYou donât know whatâs going on here, do ya, mate? Iâll tell you, thatâs right I will! Secret tunnels! Secret tunnels under this very broâthis establishment! And Iâd tell you what I saw under there, but those are images I wouldnât wish on my worst enemy! Look at what they did to my friendâs head! One swipe, and look at this blood. So outta my way, âcause weâre leaving!â
There was a murmur from the back, perhaps an attempt to argue for calm, but it didnât take.
âWhy donât you go down there yourself, then come back and show me how to be calm? Until then, get the hell out of my way!â
The door opened. A human looked out, gesturing to the man behind the desk with a frantic series of hand movements that might have been a full paragraph in some secret sign language, or might have been vague, incoherent panic. The man behind the desk nodded.
âThatâs right!â the voice from the back boomed. âYou tell your friend out there to call whatever help you call on when you have trouble. Tell them to come down to the basement, because Iâd love to have some company with me. Itâll make me feel safer.â
The man behind the desk turned, and took a few steps so he filled up most of the doorway. He spoke in a low mutter whose rumble could also be felt throughout the room, even though the actual words were only intelligible to a few. âI think youâd better stop talking about the basement.â
Tumbledownâbecause thatâs who the booming voice belonged toâsmirked, but also lowered his voice. âNot for public consumption, is it? Then step out of the way, and we leave, nice and quiet.â
âRight.â The large man turned to the side. The way was clear.
Tumbledown, Strummer, and Vaquita strode through the door, into the main room, then kept going on out.
It would have been far too smooth and easy, except for the greasy-haired, cheap-suit-wearing dwarf and retinue of flunkies flanking him who were waiting outside the brothel.
Vaquita looked at the dwarf. It was always fun to look down at someone, even if it was only a centimeter or two. âMadam Sousa?â
The dwarf grinned, exposing yellow teeth. âI hear you got some complaints about my place.
