Twenty-Two

When the canyon finally ended, the cliffs to either side slowly diminishing until they were little more than low hills, Cole saw they were now headed east.

“This is good,” Goyathlay assured him. “The amulet travels this same road.”

Cole still couldn’t make any sense of that. They’d gone north from Denver, then west, then south, and now east. Were they simply racing along the state’s perimeter? To what end? But for now it was enough to know that they were still on the right path.

Then came the breakdown.

It happened a few days after they’d passed Pagosa Springs. The sun was high overhead, the sky was crystal clear for a change, without the wind that had been dogging them along most of their journey, and the road was smooth and wide and gently curving through hills and valleys. Then they hit a detour, the regular road evidently closed for repairs. Following the signs, the road abruptly narrowed as it descended, becoming more of a trail as it arced up over and through rises, the ground becoming more uneven so that they were jostling and bouncing their way across rocky terrain.

At first Cole thought one of the others had coughed. And again. He twisted around, trying to figure out who it was and if they were all right, and saw Hazard was grimacing like she was in pain. Then he heard the sound again, and realized it was coming not from her but from her ATV.

“Everything okay?” he called back, but even as he spoke black smoke began billowing from the front grille of her vehicle. She hit a bump and sailed into the air, seeming to pick up even more speed in the process, and Alaric had to slam on his brakes in order to avoid getting crushed by her larger vehicle as it slammed back down hard and careened forward.

“Hey!” the decker yelped, but forgot his consternation when he saw what was going on. “You all right?”

The big troll didn’t answer, but that was because she was visibly wrestling her bike, trying to force it to the side with brute strength. Doc spotted the problem at once.

“Her engine’s shot!” he shouted. “Put it in neutral!”

“Trying!” Hazard yelled back, but whatever she was doing didn’t appear to be helping. Plus they were on a steep slope at the moment—coasting to a stop probably wouldn’t work anyway.

“Hit the brakes!” Cole added, but then saw that her foot was already stomping down on the brake pedal.

“Not the rear brakes! Use the front!” Doc hollered, but he was too far behind the troll for her to hear him. “We gotta do something!” he yelled at Cole. “She don’t slow it down somehow, she’s either gonna flip over or slam into a wall, and either way she’ll hit like a freight train!” Cole could hear the part his friend had left unvoiced—even someone as tough as Hazard might not survive an impact like that.

They had to come up with something, and fast.

Reaching into his saddlebag, Cole yanked out his magnetic grapples, and the ropes he used with them.
