Pícaro awoke the next morning to a strange smell. It reminded him of soykaf, but deeper and richer, a more flavorful aroma. He rose and wiped saliva from his tusks with the bedsheet. Immediately, he was disappointed that he had. The sheets were comfortable, without any rips or wear; he felt guilty about treating them the same as he treated his own back home.

The room looked different in the morning light than it had last night. It was white and bare; no shadows gave it depth or texture. The bed was ork-sized, a bit longer than a queen-size, but not as wide. The two windows were open, illuminating the room through parted, cream-colored curtains.

Pícaro got up, walked to the nearest window, and pulled the curtain back. This part of the undercity wasn’t as covered by highways and ferrocrete, and he was able to see the horizon more clearly than he could remember. He also saw a park in the distance, verdant and serene, something he never expected to see in Tenochtitlan. A clock tower rose above the park, an ancient monument to a time when nobody had commlinks, internal electronics keeping track of time, or media on every corner telling you exactly what time it was by which show was on. He wondered why there weren’t any people there.

I bet the Muertos keep people away for some reason. I wonder why? Not much else could keep people from enjoying a piece of real estate like that.

Taking a moment to stretch, he realized his pain from yesterday’s beating seemed to have all healed up. Healing must be part of the magic gift. A few deep breaths brought the soykaf-like smell back, along with something else. Chorizo. Shame rushed through Pícaro, thinking of his abuela and what she must be thinking after he didn’t come home last night.

No time to wory about that right now. I’ll make things right later, once I know what the frag I’ve signed up for here.

He left the room, still in his wrinkled and dirty clothes from the day before, and followed his nose through the mansion. He didn’t see anyone on the way down, and figured they must be sleeping in after a long night.

On the main level, he found and stepped through a swinging double door into the kitchen to track down the smells causing his mouth to water. They were coming from a table in the center of the room. Behind it, a bench was set into the window sill so a person could sit on the sill with the windows angled around them, surrounded by light.

On the other side of the table, a large C-shaped counter space wrapped around the back of the room, marking out the space of the kitchen proper. Set into the counter was an Aztechnology Frio Mio, one of the new all-in-one refrigerator, freezer, disposal, storage, and food preparation machines, and an Aztechnology Delicia de Calor, the all-in-one cooking, baking, reheating, dehydrating machine. Pícaro remembered from a commercial that
