Maria needed a few moments to catch her breath before she slid back into her professional demeanor. She turned off notifications on her commlink, knowing any messages from Tamsynn would be too much of a distraction right now. She needed to embrace the path she knew so well, the one that had kept her alive through countless impossible scenarios. If Jacksonâs black ops did move tonight, Maria would have to be at the top of her game.
But she still needed answers, and she wasnât about to leave without getting them. Why had Komatsu sent an agent to her home? What was so valuable that Ares would risk killing her over? Were these two things connected? How exposed was she?
Going to the terminal, Maria started with a search of employees. She entered the search parameters for the unwelcome guest breaking into her home. The physical description only yielded thirty results, so she scanned through them manually, but no one matched her memory or was listed as killed in action. All of them still had active employment records.
She would have to try a different access point. If she tampered too much from the doctorâs terminal with his credentials, it could jeopardize her mission. Her search was critical, but failing her assignment wasnât a price she was willing to pay, especially with IA still paying attention to every move she made. It would raise questions she couldnât afford to answer.
After taking care to make sure everything in the office was exactly as it was when they entered, Maria reactivated the motion sensor for the lights and walked out into the hall. She headed for the stairwell, wanting to avoid the elevator. She was less likely to run into people on the stairs.
According to the buildingâs directory, the tenth floor contained the corporationâs HR department. That would be the best place to search for local access to the files she needed without jumping through a bunch of security hoops.
This floor was as empty as the others, with only a few people walking around and most of them buried in their own affairs. Maria pretended to scroll through some personal notes as she walked through the halls, her head slightly bent but keeping an eye on her surroundings with her peripheral vision. Once she had to twist her body to avoid someone walking down the hall. The man grunted an apology without even looking at her.
As soon as she found an unlocked office in the HR department, she stepped inside, closing the door behind her. Once again, she made sure to turn the lights off to prevent passersby from knowing someone was in the office. Sitting down at the terminal, she went to work.
While Maria didnât have the skills of someone dedicated to the craft, she did have tools at her disposal. As long as the security wasnât too strict, she should be able to get access using the primary terminal userâs credentials. She watched the hallway as the scripts worked their technological magic and gained her access to the userâs login.
