In the cabin of the wherry, Zavahl felt himself turn cold at Elion’s words. “He can’t be here,” he whispered. “It can’t be true!” Dammit, this just isn’t fair. He had been through so much these past few days—these past few years—and at last it had looked as though his life was taking a turn for the better. The demon in his mind, who had frightened him so badly at first, had proved to be no evil spirit but a member of an ancient and knowledgeable race. Aethon was intelligent and pleasant company, and he was very considerate about not intruding himself upon the thoughts of his host.

The things Zavahl had learned from Toulac had given him hope that he might be of some use in this strange new land, and Cergorn, who had wanted him out of Gendival, had been removed from power. There was the inn, and Ailie, who was sitting on the bed beside him, holding his hand as if she never intended to let it go. Furthermore he suspected he had the beginnings of a tentative friendship with Elion. But now, just when things looked to be improving and he’d dared to hope that he might make a new life here for himself, the Loremaster had told him this dreadful news, and all his hopes and plans had come crashing down in ruin.

Zavahl felt anger kindling within him. “Curse him—he took everything away from me once and even tried to rob me of my life. I won’t let him do it again!”

Elion’s face split in a grin. “Good for you, Zavahl! Stand up to him! You’ll have support from all of us, I promise. Amaurn will listen to me and Veldan—especially Veldan. His position isn’t so secure yet that he can afford to go about alienating his supporters.”

“It won’t do him any good to lose all the help from the village folk, either,“ Ailie put in fiercely. ”We do a lot for the Loremasters—in fact, most of them would be lost without us to take care of them—and we could do a great deal to make them very uncomfortable—if we were provoked.“

“And don’t forget about me.” The voice of the Dragon echoed softly through Zavahl’s mind. “I remember how this Lord Blade acted when he captured you, and I, too, almost lost my life when he put you on that pyre. He will have none of the answers he seeks from me until I have assurances of his change of heart, and until he makes reparation to both of us for his former misdeeds.”

Zavahl was so moved by all their support that he almost wept. He thought back to the way he had been when he had left Callisiora: beaten, cowed, terrified, and defeated. A lot had changed in a very short time, and though he wouldn’t regain his confidence overnight, he knew that he had made a good start and set his feet on the road to a new and more fulfilling existence. With shame,
