Chapter 15

THE COMMERCIAL SPACEPORT sprawled over several acres of land on the edge of the city and the drone of engines could be heard further still. Small gleaming speeders shot through the air and massive freighters lumbered to the ground. The acrid bite of fuel and solvents clung to the air and smoke from landing thrusters snaked around the terminals and landing zones.

They’d caught a shuttle from the main building to terminal seven, where the Ravana was docked. Walking the short distance to their gangway, they passed through crowds of people, some heading for commercial flights, others to their own private spaceships. Inside the air was clean, even if it smelt a little stale. They paused at the sealed metal door leading to the gangway to their spaceship. Through the large window next to them, the sleek silver lines of the Ravana could be seen. The main thrusters were already angled downwards, ready for take-off.

Isra touched her palm to the security pad beside the door and it unlocked, smoothly sliding open.

Tarsk was still muttering underneath his breath, shooting Isra a few dark looks. Isra had already assured him that whatever equipment he could possibly need would be available to him, then proceeded to ignore his complaints.

Kara had wished the whole time that she could block him out too. She still wasn’t sure if she was comfortable with another person knowing about her implants.

Tarsk could so easily betray her.

As they walked down the gangway to the Ravana, Kara glanced at Isra. Honestly, Kara still didn’t know what Isra wanted from her either. There had to be a price for her help. She was still irritated that she’d not seen that disc clearly. She weighed up the feasibility of trying to pick Isra’s pocket, but there was no guarantee the disc was still in there. And she didn’t want to annoy the one person that seemed to be in command of the only people helping her.

The Sword waited for them at the spaceship’s entrance. A supple dark green bodysuit covered her completely, including her face and hands. She handed Isra a flexi, never taking her focus off Tarsk. The Shield leant in the doorway to the bridge, similarly attired, but in navy blue.

“Dr Tarsk Delkie, Sword, and that’s Shield,” Isra said, flicking her hand between them. “Sword, please show him to his quarters.”

The Sword nodded but stepped up to Tarsk. She briskly frisked him, then extended her hand towards his bag, clearly intent on searching it.

Tarsk hissed, his fur puffing up and he laid his ears back. He clutched the bag to his chest tightly. “How dare you! I didn’t agree to this,” he bit out. “You all but ordered me here, and then treat me with such little respect.” His tail kept flicking back and forth.

Isra stopped on her way to the bridge and turned back to him. “I apologise for Sword’s abrupt manner, but to her, you are still an unknown entity. My security is her paramount concern.”

“I may have
