How metabolisms get lazy
In one model advocated by obesity expert Dr. James Levine, the metabolism is like a fire that requires stoking. Even an hour or two of hardcore cardio exercise once a day cannot undo the damage done by sitting all day. The more you sit, the slower your metabolism gets. Your muscles stop moving, and your heart slows. This makes sense from an evolutionary perspective. The human body burns fewer calories at rest, and as it detects less and less of a need to burn calories, it sinks further into metabolic sluggishness. Insulin effectiveness drops, and the risk of developing diabetes and heart disease increases. This results not just in decreased metabolic rates and efficiency but also in lethargy, brain fog, and the need for an afternoon nap.
Most people who use standing desks report increased alertness throughout the day. Their bodies do not shut off the way they might if they were sitting. Standing has been one of the greatest boons to my own writing career. I used to fall asleep at my desk all the time. These days, I never feel too tired to work.
What’s more, standing, walking, and moving slowly throughout the day have eclipsed exercise as my favorite and most efficient ways to stay in shape. Instead of working my body into the ground, I simply opt to walk to work, and I exercise only as a leisure activity. My weight seems much easier to manage, and I do not fight abdominal fat the way I used to when I worked out hard several days a week.
