The gift of eternal life and the gift of the Holy Spirit are given mainly for the benefit of the individual. The Holy Spirit’s gift of the spirit language is given to a born-again believer for their own self edification. Speaking in tongues was not given to bless others but to bless one’s own spirit and soul. This book is covering all the numerous and diverse ways praying in our spirit language blesses us. In the last chapter on the fruit of the Spirit we showed how the spirit language activates and increases the nine attributes of God that the Scriptures call the fruit of the Spirit. They are expressions of the nature and character of Christ Jesus. Activating and growing the fruit attributes of God helps us to be transformed into Christ’s image and likeness, thereby fulfilling His predestined purpose for each of His children. In this chapter we will show how praying in tongues with our spirit language can stimulate and activate the gifts of the Spirit.

THE GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

The gifts of the Spirit are given to believers to meet the needs of humankind. They are the nine manifestations of the Spirit. They are described in First Corinthians 12:8-10:

For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.

The gifts demonstrate that our God and Savior Jesus Christ is alive and active in the world today. The vocal gifts show that God speaks to and through His people. The revelation gifts reveal that our God is omniscient, knowing all things about everything and everyone, and He reveals some of those things to His people. The power gifts reveal that our God is omnipotent and demonstrates His power over demons, humankind, and nature.

» Revelation Gifts: Word of Knowledge, Word of Wisdom, Discerning of Spirits

» Power Gifts: Gift of Faith, Gifts of Healings, Working of Miracles

The nine gifts can be divided into three different categories of three each. The vocal gifts are those ministered by spoken words. The revelation gifts are those which are received by the mind being enlightened with spiritual thoughts that reveal certain things that are not made known by natural knowledge or wisdom. The third group consists of the power gifts, which demonstrate and minister the supernatural power of God.

The introductory Scripture (see 1 Cor. 12:7) to the gifts of the Spirit states that the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all. “For to one is given the word of wisdom by the Spirit, to another the
