Chapter 18

August 7th, 2021:

Day 47.

9:58 AM.

“Don’t do anything stupid,” Gary said.

“We can’t sit here forever, staring at the thing. We might as well try to stop it,” Sam replied.

“Couldn’t you set it off if you touch the wrong cord or something?” Quinn asked.

“I don’t see any cords, except for the timer on the outside. I haven’t seen anything like this. If it’s a bomb, I have no idea what we need to do to stop it.”

Just then, Sam yanked off the timer, threw it on the ground, and stomped on it.

“There. No explosion.”

“That was reckless and stupid,” Gary said.

“Sometimes you need to be a little reckless,” Sam replied.

“I’m not sure where to start. If dark matter is inside this thing, it wouldn’t give off any electromagnetic radiation, but there is still a way we might be able to detect it. Dark matter still has mass,” Cameron said.

“What about the encasing? That sphere looks like it’s impossible to open. Do you think we could drill into it?” Quinn asked.

Cameron took off her ring, which had a small arrangement of diamonds. She rubbed the surface of the ends of the tube that held the chrome sphere, careful not to get too close to the center that appeared to vaporize whatever touched it.

“It didn’t scratch—whatever alloy this is made from is stronger than diamonds. We won’t be able to drill into it, and the sphere has some kind of cloaking device—that or maybe a transporter of some kind,” Cameron said.

“This is pointless. We’re never going to be able to figure this thing out. We’re dead already,” Gary said.

“We’re going to figure this thing out. I just know it,” Sam said.

The sphere spun and gleamed. Sam flipped it over, careful not to touch the center.

“Where do you think all the water that flowed to it went to?” Gary asked.

“My guess is another dimension. But I don’t know what that thing is, what’s inside of it, or how it works, so your guess is as good as mine,” Cameron said.

“I think another dimension sounds good to me,” Gary added.

The birds stopped chirping, and the few cars they heard from the outside quieted. A deafening silence grew.

“Do you hear that?” Quinn asked.

“No. I don’t hear anything.” Gary replied.

“That’s my point exactly,” Quinn said. “It’s too quiet. This is Manhattan. There’s always noise outside.”

Cameron opened the curtain a crack and peered below, careful not to make the room visible from the outside.

At first glance, nothing was out of place. There were several cars motionless at the street level, but no one was walking on the sidewalks. She tilted her head to peer at the sky, which was scattered with a few clouds and the overhead sun.

“I don’t see anything.”

Quinn walked over. As he did, a large thud rattled through the building. Vibrations rattled their bones.

“What was that?” Gary asked.

The scent of the air changed. An odor hung in the air, and each breath brought in a stale, dry taste.

This time, Quinn dashed to the window and looked down.
