I didn’t know how long I’d been in the barn, but at some point, I realized there was no light filtering through the windows. Instead of the commotion of horses being moved from their stalls to the field, music from a distance filtered through the split barn wood.
I looked down at the colt who was no longer sleeping but still in my lap.
“I’ve got to go, little man.” I laid the brush against his smooth coat and gave him one more gentle grooming before I moved from beneath him.
The poor thing looked up at me like I had some magic potion to make everything all right. I didn’t. I could barely figure out my life. I was sadly underqualified to make his life better, but if my presence gave him some comfort, then I’d gladly sit here and hold him. Sometimes all we needed was to be held and know someone cared. I could be that someone for him while I was here.
I opened the barn door to waning daylight and the smell of barbecue. At the main house, people gathered around the porch. Wedding guests were arriving for the upcoming celebration, and judging by the size of the crowd, the entire ranch population was present—everyone but me.
I looked around the parking area. There were three black trucks that looked just like Keanan’s. Was one of them his? Big black trucks seemed to be a calling card for cowboys so I couldn’t be sure, but I scanned the crowd and didn’t see him.
I knew eventually Mickey would come looking for me, and I didn’t want to meet anyone smelling like horseshit and hay, so I hurried to my cabin. Keanan’s presence was everywhere. Sitting on the couch. Leaning against the counter drinking coffee.
I walked into the bedroom, and his smell was there too. He was in the sheets. On the mattress. I stripped down and threw my clothes onto the growing pile in the corner, covering up the sundress I’d worn on our date.
I walked into the bathroom and started the shower. Water sluiced over my body, heating and loosening my tense muscles.
Had it only been thirty or so hours since I’d had the best sex of my life and had an ex ruin my future? Since then I had become the proud owner of a Wonder Mop and made a baby horse think I was his mother.
I turned off the water and climbed out of the shower. I barely had the towel wrapped around my body when I heard my phone ring.
I grabbed it from my jeans pocket on the third ring.
“Hello?”
There was silence, followed by heavy breathing, and then the words, “You won’t get away with it.”
I fumbled with the phone buttons, trying to disconnect. Once I hit end, I tossed it on my bed. Who the hell was that?
In record time, I dressed. I approached my phone like it was a poisonous snake ready to strike. The phone felt hot in my hands, but that was my imagination.
