Most of us likely remember the 2013 Boston Marathon for the horrific bombing that took place at the finish line. As Boston natives, Bert and John Jacobs were likely as saddened by this event as anyone. But in addition to teaching us about the power of making serving others our chief marketing strategy, Life is good reminds us that focusing on the positive elements of life is much more skillful than focusing on the negative.

One shining example of a positive gem that came out of the 2013 Boston Marathon was a recent college graduate who had flown in from San Francisco to be part of the Mass General Hospital team. Although she didn't finish the full marathon, she did finish the first half in just over 2 hours and 20 minutes, which is a great feat in and of itself. It requires a very high level of athleticism to finish a half marathon in that amount of time. But what makes the feat awe inspiring is that her name is Lindsey Beggan. And, as of this writing, she has been cancer free for 14 years.

Wouldn't it be nice if your organization had a story like that to share? You could—if you make helping others the central element of your marketing strategy.
