The film cuts to the leafless tree from the beginning of the sequence as the camera continues to circle around it slowly. Ivanko emerges from the bottom of the frame with the apple that he has picked. As he takes a bite in close-up, his eyes stare into the sky absent-mindedly; an indication that he has reacquired his youthful curiosity. The apple at once signifies his return to the world of the living, and the beginning of his life squarely in the material world cut off from his ideal (Marichka), the latter of which ultimately leads to his death. An intertitle tells us that ‘Ivan’ gets married, but now has to ‘manage the household [hazduvaty]’, something his mother has neglected since the deaths of Oleksa and Petro (as exposed by one of the off-camera women, Evdokiia, at the beginning of the chapter ‘Loneliness’). We then fade to red as the next chapter begins.
