After a time, Bronywyn stood and turned to Elijah. “I’m so sorry for your loss, brother. All of us are mourning alongside you.”

Bronywyn bowed low to Elijah and touched the index and middle fingers of her right hand to her forehead. Nellie raised her brows, recognizing the gesture as a sign of respect usually kept for Officials and Elders in the community. Elijah lifted his right fist to his chest in a sign of acknowledgment, his head bowed low. Nellie copied Bronywyn’s gesture, dipping her head.

“Thank you.” Elijah’s eyes had a haunted look about them. “Hopefully we can stop anyone else from suffering a similar fate.” He turned to Nellie, a pleading look in his eyes. “When I heard they would be Sequencing a new Healer from Liantis, I knew I had to do something. I didn’t know it would be you, but I would never want someone to suffer the same fate as Isadora. There must be a reason that the Royal Protectors are going after Healers.

“First, they went after Isadora, and now Axel as well? The Subversives barely got him out of the prison in one piece. Something is happening in the capital and we need to figure out what is going on. We don’t know why the Royal Protectors are going after Healers, but we had to spare you Isadora’s fate.”

Nellie nodded, but her mind was blank. She was still trying to process all the information. Her head was beginning to pound, and she rubbed her temples.

“This is... a lot,” Nellie said. She looked between Elijah and Bronywyn, sighing. “Thank you for telling me all this. I do have a few more questions though.”

Bronywyn muttered, “Of course you do.”

Nellie narrowed her eyes. “Can you tell me where we are? How is it possible that the trees are so green?”

A wry smile danced on the warrior’s lips. “You are at the headquarters of the Subversives.”
