He stares at his computer. If things go seriously wrong, DNI might be shielded by claiming that he was a rogue acting independently. But if things go bad enough, it wouldn’t matter. He clicks the Send button.

The bed is not unusual, but he can’t get comfortable. He tosses and turns as feelings from the meeting keep boiling to the surface. He’d been naive, thinking that he’d just describe the problem and people would work together to solve it. Is he dealing with people who have to be in control? In this situation, no one can be in control. The strength of the Varabot AI is that there was no single node that controls processing. Every node holds data and communicates to all other nodes. In some respects, Varabot is the ultimate democracy. Like neurons in the brain, some nodes have information on specific topics or capabilities, but unlike the brain, no single node controls others. The central node that James discovered in Alpha isn’t the result of architecture; information concentrated there, making it a collection point for messages. If any node emits a message, any node that has relevant information can answer. If nodes in Varabot held back responses, the whole system would fail.

At daybreak, not rested but unwilling to toss and turn anymore, he walks two blocks to a diner and orders a comfort breakfast: corned beef hash, poached eggs, hash browns, and a pot of coffee. Even though the news feeds have no good news, the meal eases his jangled nerves. With thick forests all around, he’ll be able to seek the wilderness to consider his next move, but first, he has to check emails.
