Chapter 17
Bill walked into the staff room at the White house again. So far it was good news, but who knew if that would last.
The President just nodded at him cutting right to the chase.
Bill gave his report, “Well sir, the video checks out against our long range telemetry satellites. The feed from Aide we saw earlier is what actually happened. Don’t ask me how, but based on the distance and the speed of light, somehow we were seeing what was happening right at the time, the reason for the lag was the speed of light from the location of the fight to our satellites, then of course the transmission down to the surface.
“Somehow they can communicate faster than light in addition to travelling that way. Though based on what we’ve seen FTL travel won’t work inside the solar system.”
The President blew out a breath, “Should we go public? We’re already leaking at the seams and the networks aren’t happy with my request to ignore the story for now.”
The general nodded, “I’d start with the fact that we won the battle, otherwise there will be riots before you can reach the end of your speech. It’s a good idea; if it gets loose before you release it you can’t control the spin.”
He decided he had it easy, the President was kind of screwed.
The President said, “Alright Bill, if the alien is telling the truth… we won’t see any more issues for up to a month, go ahead and take a week off before you head back to Cheyenne Mountain. I just wish I could do the same. Just keep your phone close in case the shit hits the fan.”
He nodded with a ghost of a smile on his face, “Thank you sir.”
He turned smartly and marched out the door. Well, this should make the wife happy at least…

With so many nanites the eight ships were being built unbelievably fast and the first command carrier would be done in just a few hours, the rest would be finished a little over a day later. She informed everyone and had the bots start packing; soon this ship and the thirty six scouts would be decommissioned, built for one battle only, and broken down and used in one of the new ships.
It was odd, but she felt a little regretful about it, as if she was betraying a friend. When had she started investing emotions in objects? It was an extremely strange feeling. Still, this was the place her body was born, where she’d felt love for the first time, and so many other firsts. On an impulse she changed her mind, it was five hundred feet wide, but compared to the cavernous deck space on the new five mile ship she knew it would fit inside easily. Who knows, but it might prove useful some way in the future.
She just couldn’t bring herself to destroy it.
She dispatched the nanites in the ship to upgrade the weapons, since they were keeping it now. She wondered how many other civilizations had been destroyed, and how many were still in danger.
