After what felt like swimming in the dark without a life jacket, he was glad to have the opportunity to sit with Bridges and his brother to create a plan. He kept a wary eye on the rearview mirror, watching for a possible tail, but if the gunman was following them, he’d be disappointed to learn their destination was none other than the FBI office building.

Rush-hour traffic was its usual mess after a snowstorm. Normally, he was a patient driver, but today he was irritated with every vehicle that got in his way. He was anxious to reach the federal building, if nothing more than to have some peace of mind in knowing Joy would be safe there.

Too bad they couldn’t live there, he thought wryly. He glanced at Joy, who seemed lost in her own thoughts.

“Hey, this is going to work out great.” He infused his tone with confidence. “I have a feeling Doug Bridges will know all about Craig Washington’s little side business. The information you have related to your brother’s death and what we know of Leon’s passing may be just what they need to close him down.”

“I hope so,” she agreed. “But it does make me wonder why they haven’t closed him down already. I mean, what are they waiting for?”

Good question. “I’m not sure, but we’ll know more when we meet with Doug and Brady.” He had the utmost faith in his brother. “Maybe they’re trying to figure out who else is involved in the scheme.”

“Maybe.” He could tell she was less than enthusiastic about this side trip, and he didn’t understand why.

“Trust me, okay?” He took her hand in his.

“I do trust you, Tarin.” She offered a wan smile. “I’m sure the feds will come up with a good plan.”

They’d better, he silently agreed.

Checking the rearview mirror, he frowned when he noticed the black truck with tinted windows was still two cars behind him. The dark windows had caught his attention, and he made a quick right-hand turn at the next intersection without using his turn signal.

Then he sped up a bit and jockeyed over to the left lane to turn again. The light turned yellow, forcing him to stop and wait.

The black truck with its tinted windows had followed him around the corner and was now only one car back.

Alarm skittered down the back of his neck. He wanted to run the light, but there was too much traffic. The moment he had a green arrow, he made the turn, then executed another left turn at the next street, cutting off a vehicle coming toward him. The driver had to hit the brakes and honked loudly in protest.

“What’s happening?” Joy grabbed onto the door handle. “Is someone following us?”

He couldn’t lie to her. “Yes, a black truck with tinted windows. Don’t worry, I’m going to lose him.”

She nodded as he continued making abrupt turns that should have gotten him a reckless-driving ticket. He ended up heading in the opposite direction from where the FBI offices were located, but it couldn’t be helped.
