26 INDIAN HUNTER

John Quincy Adams Ward’s first sculpture, Indian Hunter, was considered a major breakthrough in American sculpture from the previous generation of classically influenced statues, such as the nearby Angel of the Waters by Emma Stebbins. Though Ward based the stance of his Indian on that of the famous ancient Roman Borghese Gladiator, he introduced real-life observation, even spending time with the Dakota tribe, to capture this truly American subject.

After a lifetime of sculpting both real-life and symbolic personalities, including three works in Central Park, Ward reflected that his favorite theme was “nature and freedom,” the subject of Indian Hunter. It is for that reason that the artist chose a life-size copy of this most cherished work for his own grave marker in Urbana, Ohio.
