TYLER HAD SPENT THE past thirty-two hours stewing about Megan, and by ten that night, he was practically jumping out of his skin to do something about it.

He’d been so desperate after a night of lying awake thinking about her that he’d sent her that goofy text this morning. It was an adolescent invitation. Neither clear nor specific—and definitely not suave. But he could hardly ask her to go out with him out of the blue when they hadn’t even had a conversation to clarify what was going on.

So he would stop by the coffee shop as she closed up this evening and he’d talk to her, no matter how much he might dread the outcome.

He wasn’t supposed to be into her this way. He wasn’t supposed to think about Megan like that. But he clearly did, so it was time to be a grown-up and do something about it.

Maybe she’d be into him too.

So he took the dogs back to his boss’s place, partly relieved to be rid of them and partly sad to see them go. Then he ran for more than an hour, trying to channel his nerves and emotional energy into something constructive.

Then he showered. Spent way too long figuring out what to wear. Then he had to sit for almost an hour, waiting until it was nine forty-five and he could start walking over to Coble Coffee.

The place was almost empty when he got there. Megan was behind the counter, already putting stuff up and cleaning off the counters and equipment in preparation for closing time. There were a couple of college students studying at a table, but otherwise no one else was there.

“Hey,” Megan said when she saw him. “About five more minutes.”

“No hurry.” Tyler felt awkward standing around, so he sat down at the closest table. Five more minutes. Then something would happen.

The students must have heard what she’d said and took it as a signal to leave. They got up and gathered their stuff before heading out onto the sidewalk.

Megan was busy with the closing procedures. She finished behind the counter. Then wiped down a few tables that had evidently been used in the past couple of hours. Tyler got up to help her rearrange the chairs, tucking them back neatly under the appropriate tables. And through it all, she wouldn’t quite look at him.

She grabbed her bag from behind the counter and gave him a smile that didn’t reach her eyes. “Okay. I’m ready. Just need to lock up.”

“Sounds good.” He came with her to the door and stood outside while she locked the door behind her.

“All right.” Megan slid the keys back into her bag. Then she twisted her hands together and looked down at the sidewalk beneath their feet. “So.”

“So.” He cleared his throat. Gave himself a quick inner lecture about being a decent person and a grown-ass man and not hemming and hawing his way through this. “I thought we should talk or something. Do you want to get a bite to eat?”

“We can if you’re hungry, although it’s kind of late.
